What is Morse Code?

Morse code is a character encoding system that represents letters, numbers, and punctuation as sequences of dots (·) and dashes (—). Developed by Samuel Morse and Alfred Vail in the 1830s, it was the first widely-adopted digital communication system, revolutionizing long-distance communication via telegraph.

The International Morse Code (ITU standard) assigns shorter patterns to more common letters — E is a single dot, T is a single dash — making transmission faster. Today, Morse code remains in use for amateur radio (ham radio), aviation, maritime signaling, and as an accessibility tool for people with disabilities.
